Optional Coverages

Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) is optional.
LDW is not available on following car groups J, XA, XB, XC, XE, XG, XI, XK, XL, XM, XN, XO. It is mandatory for customer to take PDW (Partial Damage Waiver)
 

Available at all locations and varies depending on car group rented.
Our Recommendation to all our customers will always be to acquire our 100 percent waiver protection (LDW).  This is an optional product.  It releases the renter of all financial responsibility in the case of an accident or theft.  This is our most complete coverage product; it includes tires and wind shields. 

LDW does not include the cost of replacing lost license plates or keys, tow services and police fines. Client must follow all driving conditions stated in our terms of service clauses, any infractions to the stated conditions voids this coverage. 
If LDW is declined, the renter is fully responsible for the full value of the Avis vehicle, in addition to stolen accessories, repairs and loss of use during repairs.  An additional charge card hold will apply. The customer must sign an "Acknowledgement of Responsibility".  

Theft Protection (TP) is included with the purchase of LDW.

PDW (Partial Damage Waiver) - Available at the counter. Check at the rental counter for additional details.
PDW is mandatory for the following car groups J, XA, XB, XC, XE, XG, XI, XK, XL, XM, XN, XO.
PDW reduces the customers financial responsibility for damage to or loss of the Avis vehicle as a result of an accident or theft. 

Some credit cards provide insurance coverage, with certain limitations, as a benefit of using the card to rent vehicles. The customer is advised to contact the card issuer before the rental. The customer will be totally responsible for handling coverage with the card issuer for any damage or theft of the Avis vehicle. Any waiver must be discussed with the location upon arrival.

Note: Other coverage may be available at the counter, check upon arrival for information.

Credit Card Policies

Avis accepts the Avis Charge Card, American Express, Discover Card, Japan Credit Bureau, MasterCard, Optima and Visa.  At the time of rental we will request a pre-authroization on your charge card.  The pre-authorization is determined and varies according to the responsibility waiver option selected and the type of vehicle rented.  When the rental agreement is closed, we will deduct the pre-authorization amount from the total.  The remaining amount will then be released.

The waiver range varies between 80-100 percent. The minimum pre-authorization is the amount of rental plus 1000.00 USD up to a maximum amount of 4000.00 USD if no waiver option is selected. 


Debit Card Policies

Debit cards are only accepted, as a form of payment, at the end of the rental in substituion of the credit card presented at the beginning of the rental.


Drivers License

At the time of rental, the driver must present a valid drivers license in the drivers name from their country of residence.  Customers presenting a drivers license in a non-Roman alphabet must also present an International Driving Permit (IDP) to serve as a translation in addition to their valid drivers license.  We reserve the right to check the drivers license against Avis standards and refuse to rent if those standards are not met.

Public liability insurance is in accordance with the insurance laws of the country.  Customer may inquire at the time of rental for additional information of the benefits, conditions and acceptance.

Mexico City Driving Restrictions: Driving cars in Mexico City is limited based on license plate and days of the week. Check with reservations or the counter for additional details.

Customers with disabilities

I have a disability, do you offer adapted vehicles?
Yes, specially adapted vehicles are available at some of our rental locations.  Please call the Reservations team for more information.

I have a disability, do you offer hand controls?
Yes, we offer hand controls which are suitable if you have good use of your upper body, including hands and fingers.  Hand controls include a hand-operated brake, accelerator controls, a steering ball and panoramic mirrors are also available.  If you need them, they're completely free of charge.

To use hand controls, you will need to book an automatic vehicle. Please give us at least 48 hours' notice if you hand controls or panoramic mirrors fitted to the vehicle. If you need them at shorter notice, please call the Reservations team.

Popular optional extras to rent

I have small children, do you offer child seats?
Yes, we offer baby, infant, child and full backed booster seats.  A baby seat is typically suitable for a child from birth to 12 months old and weighing no more than 13 kilos.  An infant seat is typically suitable for a child aged 9 months to 4 years old and weighing between 9 and 18 kilos.  A child seat is typically suitable for a child aged 4 to 11 years old and weighing between 15 and 36 kilos.  A booster seat is typically suitable for a child aged 8 to 11 years old and weighing between 20 and 45 kilos.

In some rental locations, we may arrange for a third party to fit the seat for you. But remember, it is always your responsibility to check the seat is fitted correctly before you drive away.

Please note: In the United Kingdom all children must normally use a child car seat until they're 12 years old or 135cm tall. 

How much are your child seats?
The fee for renting a seat is £11.99 a day. If you rent the vehicle for more than 7 days, you'll only be charged for a maximum of 7 days and get to use the seat for the duration of your rental, up to 28 days.
 
If the seat is damaged, lost or stolen, you will have to pay for a replacement. This is likely to cost between £60.00 and £90.00 on top of the hire fee.  If you can show the damage or loss was not in any way your fault or due to your negligence, we will refund this cost to you.

I'm not familiar with the area; can I rent a GPS (satellite navigation system)?Travel Companion Tablet - This provides a GPS service as well as other useful features you may need when travelling. The fee for hiring Travel Companion Tablet is between £9.99 and £14.99 per day depending on features activated. If you rent the vehicle for more than 10 days, you'll only be charged for a maximum of 10 days and get to use the device for the duration of your rental, up to 28 days. If the Travel Companion Tablet is damaged, lost or stolen, you'll have to pay for a replacement. This is likely to cost from £300.00 on top of the hire fee. If you can show the damage or loss was not in any way your fault or due to your negligence, we will refund this cost to you.

Please note: In some countries, it is against the law to use a GPS that tells you where speed cameras are. If you plan to travel outside of the United Kingdom you should check to see whether you can use our GPS as it will give you speed information. 

Do you offer an audio tour guide service on your GPS?
No, unfortunately we do not offer an audio tour guide service at this time.

I want to be able to access the internet anywhere I go, do you offer a solution?

Travel Companion Tablet - This provides unlimited data per day, as well as other useful features you may need when travelling. The fee for hiring Travel Companion Tablet is between £9.99 and £14.99 a day depending on features activated. If you rent the vehicle for more than 10 days, you'll only be charged for a maximum of 10 days and get to use the device for the duration of your rental, up to 28 days.

If the Travel Companion Tablet is damaged, lost or stolen, you’ll have to pay for a replacement. This is likely to cost from £300.00 on top of the hire fee. If you can show the damage or loss was not in any way your fault or due to your negligence, we will refund this cost to you. If any Travel Companion Tablet accessories are damaged, lost or stolen, you'll have to pay for a replacement. This is likely to cost from £2.00 to £10.00 on top of the hire fee. If you can show the damage or loss was not in any way your fault or due to your negligence, we will refund this cost to you. 

Please note: In many countries, including the United Kingdom, it is illegal to drive while using a handheld mobile phone, tablet or other communications device. It is your responsibility to drive safely and according to the laws of the country you're driving in.

No, unfortunately we do not offer any electronic toll charging devices at this time.

No, unfortunately we do not offer all weather tyres at this time.

Travel Into Other Countries

What countries am I allowed to take the vehicle to?

You are only allowed to use the vehicle in the following countries:

  • England
  • Scotland
  • Wales
  • Northern Ireland

If you wish to drive the car from Northern Ireland into the Republic of Ireland, your rental will be subject to a cross border coverage fee of 26.86 UKL. This fee covers cross border vehicle retrieval in case of breakdown. Avis cars may not be taken outside Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
Can I buy a product to allow me to drive in other countries?

No. With effect from 14th July 2022 we have stopped selling continental cover, meaning that it's no longer possible to take our vehicles outside of the UK except to the Republic of Ireland. Information about the cost for this can be found on our website under continental cover.


Travel Into Other Countries

Cars can be returned to other Avis locations within this country based on car availability.  Vehicles may be rented in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Hermosillo, Mexicali, Monterrey, Saltillo and Tijuana are allowed into the U.S., but must be returned to Mexico.  One-way rentals outside this country are not permitted.  Cars rented in Mexico cannot be terminated in the U.S.
