Australian Pre-Authorisation Holds Explained Australian Pre-Authorisation Holds Explained
Whether you pay with debit card or credit card, we will take a pre-authorisation hold on your card for the duration of your rental.
When picking up your vehicle:
- Avis requests your bank to reserve a hold against the funds of your card.
- This will present as a pending transaction that reduces the money you have available to spend. However, the funds do not leave your account – we have not charged your card.
- The hold fee will be placed on your credit/debit card for the total estimated rental charges plus an additional pre-authorisation

If using a corporate AWD, tour or other partner rates the pre-authorisation amount may differ.
When returning your vehicle:
- Once your card has been charged with the invoice amount, the hold will be released by your bank.
- Depending on your bank, it can take up to 14 days for these funds to be released and available for use.
- As this was a temporary hold, not a charge, the returned funds will not show as a transaction on your statement.
The time to release the hold is not within our control. We recommend contacting your bank for queries about the time to return this holding fee.
