Optional Coverages

Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) is optional.
LDW is not available on following car groups J, XA, XB, XC, XE, XG, XI, XK, XL, XM, XN, XO. It is mandatory for customer to take PDW (Partial Damage Waiver)
 

Available at all locations and varies depending on car group rented.
Our Recommendation to all our customers will always be to acquire our 100 percent waiver protection (LDW).  This is an optional product.  It releases the renter of all financial responsibility in the case of an accident or theft.  This is our most complete coverage product; it includes tires and wind shields. 

LDW does not include the cost of replacing lost license plates or keys, tow services and police fines. Client must follow all driving conditions stated in our terms of service clauses, any infractions to the stated conditions voids this coverage. 
If LDW is declined, the renter is fully responsible for the full value of the Avis vehicle, in addition to stolen accessories, repairs and loss of use during repairs.  An additional charge card hold will apply. The customer must sign an "Acknowledgement of Responsibility".  

Theft Protection (TP) is included with the purchase of LDW.

PDW (Partial Damage Waiver) - Available at the counter. Check at the rental counter for additional details.
PDW is mandatory for the following car groups J, XA, XB, XC, XE, XG, XI, XK, XL, XM, XN, XO.
PDW reduces the customers financial responsibility for damage to or loss of the Avis vehicle as a result of an accident or theft. 

Some credit cards provide insurance coverage, with certain limitations, as a benefit of using the card to rent vehicles. The customer is advised to contact the card issuer before the rental. The customer will be totally responsible for handling coverage with the card issuer for any damage or theft of the Avis vehicle. Any waiver must be discussed with the location upon arrival.

Note: Other coverage may be available at the counter, check upon arrival for information.

Credit Card Policies

Avis accepts the Avis Charge Card, American Express, Discover Card, Japan Credit Bureau, MasterCard, Optima and Visa.  At the time of rental we will request a pre-authroization on your charge card.  The pre-authorization is determined and varies according to the responsibility waiver option selected and the type of vehicle rented.  When the rental agreement is closed, we will deduct the pre-authorization amount from the total.  The remaining amount will then be released.

The waiver range varies between 80-100 percent. The minimum pre-authorization is the amount of rental plus 1000.00 USD up to a maximum amount of 4000.00 USD if no waiver option is selected. 


Debit Card Policies

Debit cards are only accepted, as a form of payment, at the end of the rental in substituion of the credit card presented at the beginning of the rental.


Drivers License

At the time of rental, the driver must present a valid drivers license in the drivers name from their country of residence.  Customers presenting a drivers license in a non-Roman alphabet must also present an International Driving Permit (IDP) to serve as a translation in addition to their valid drivers license.  We reserve the right to check the drivers license against Avis standards and refuse to rent if those standards are not met.

Public liability insurance is in accordance with the insurance laws of the country.  Customer may inquire at the time of rental for additional information of the benefits, conditions and acceptance.

Fuel Policy

Should I bring the vehicle back with a full tank of fuel?
Yes. The vehicle will normally be supplied with a full tank of fuel. You must return it to us with the same amount of fuel it had in it when you picked it up usually a full tank as shown on the factory-installed fuel gauge. We recommend you fill up as close to the return location as you can on the return date, and keep the receipt to show us. If you do not return the vehicle with a full tank and you can not show us a receipt for fuel we will charge you.

Fuel Options

I plan to travel more than 120 kilometres, and want peace of mind, do you have a fuel option for me?
Yes, with Fuel Up Front you pay for a full tank of fuel, based on the manufacturer's stated fuel tank capacity for your vehicle plus our costs of refuelling the vehicle for you. Then you just return the vehicle with whatever's left in the tank (even if it's virtually empty) so long as the engine still runs.
How do I calculate the cost of Fuel Up Front?
Depending on where you’re renting, we charge the average fuel price at the start of your rental period as stated on this EU fuel index: However, you don't get a refund for any fuel you don't use.
Can I get Fuel up Front at any time?
No, if you want to take advantage of Fuel Up Front, you must ask for it during the booking process or when you pick up the vehicle.
I plan to travel less than 120 kilometres, do I still need to fill up?
Yes, often the fuel gauges stills look full so we ask you to fill up the tank near to the return location and show us a copy of the receipt. If you don’t have time to fill up the tank, or can’t show us a receipt, we will apply EZ Fuel to cover our costs of refuelling the vehicle for you.
How much is EZ Fuel?
Depending on where you’re renting, you pay of fixed fee of between 26.00 EUR and 32.90 EUR. You retain the right to prove, that no loss or damage has occurred or that the loss or damage occurred is considerably lower than the EZ Fuel Fee.
What are my options if I don’t return the vehicle full and haven’t bought Fuel up Front?
Pay on Return will apply if you have driven more than 120 kilometres and:

  • Don't buy Fuel Up Front
  • Don't return the vehicle with a full tank

How do I calculate the cost of Pay on Return?
You pay for fuel based on the factory-installed fuel gauge rounded down to the nearest eighth (1/8) of a tank. This is based on the manufacturer's stated fuel tank capacity.
We charge between 1.5 and three times the average fuel price at the end of the rental period for the Germany as stated on this EU fuel index.. The price per litre will be stated on your rental agreement. This charge covers our cost of driving to the nearest petrol station at short notice, and potentially delaying the next customer's rental.

 

 

Electric Vehicles

How much battery charge should I return an electric vehicle with?

 

You must return the vehicle with at least a 70% battery charge, or the same % battery charge as it had at the time of pick-up.

What am i charged if I fail to return an electric vehicle with the required 70% battery charge, or the same % battery charge as it had at the time of pick-up?

We charge a fixed amount dependent on the battery life showing on the factory-installed battery gauge. This is the Pay on Return rate. the amounts charged are set out below:

One Way Rentals

Can I pick up the vehicle from one rental location and return it to another?
Yes, some rental locations let you collect the vehicle and any optional extras from one rental location and return them to another.
How much is the One-Way fee?
The price depends on the rental location. If you want to pick up the vehicle and return it to a different location in the same country, you can expect it to be between 15 EUR and 33,21 EUR. If you want to pick up the vehicle in one country and drop it off in another country, you can expect it to be between 100 EUR and 4.500 EUR.
How do I get a One-Way rental?
You can request a one-way rental when you book or you can ask for it when you get to the rental location.
If you asked for a one-way rental when you booked, the fee will be included in your rental price.
How much will it cost if I did not request a One-Way rental but return the vehicle to a different location?
You will be charged a one-way fee at the pay at location prices available on the day you return the vehicle.

I have a disability, do you offer adapted vehicles?
Yes, specially adapted vehicles are available at some of our rental locations. Please call the Reservations team for more information.
I have a disability, do you offer hand controls?
No, regrettably, we do not currently offer hand controls or panoramic mirrors at this time.

Popular optional extras to rent

I have small children, do you offer child seats?
Yes, we offer baby, infant, and child seats. A baby seat is typically suitable for a child from birth to 12 months old and weighing no more than 13 kilos. An infant seat is typically suitable for a child aged 9 months to 4 years old and weighing between 9 and 18 kilos. A child seat is typically suitable for a child aged 4 to 12 years old and weighing between 15 and 36 kilos.
In some rental locations, we may arrange for a third party to fit the seat for you. But remember, it is always your responsibility to check the seat is fitted correctly before you drive away.
Please note: In the Germany, all children must normally use a child car seat until they are 12 years old or 150 cm tall.
How much are your child seats?
The fee for renting a seat will depend on where you're renting but you can expect it to cost between EUR 13.00 and EUR 16.31 a day. If you rent the vehicle for more than 6 days, you'll only be charged for a maximum EUR 86.59 and get to use the seat for the duration of your rental, up to 28 days.
If the seat is damaged, lost or stolen, and if you are responsible for that, you will have to pay for a replacement. The costs of this are based on the replacement value and based on experience, range between EUR 80.00 and EUR 200.00 plus the rental costs.
I am not familiar with the area; can I rent a GPS (satellite navigation system)?
Yes, the fee for renting a GPS will depend on where you're renting but you can expect it to cost between EUR 11.00 and EUR 13.80 a day. If you rent the vehicle for more than 14 days, you will only be charged for a maximum of 14 days and get to use the GPS for the duration of your rental, up to 28 days.

If the GPS is damaged, lost or stolen, and if you are responsible for that, you will have to pay for a replacement. The costs of this are based on the replacement value and based on experience, range between 209.00 EUR and 260.00 EUR plus the rental costs.
Please note: In some countries, it is against the law to use a GPS that tells you where speed cameras are. It is illegal in Germany. If you rent a GPS from us, it won't give you speed camera information.
Do you offer an audio tour guide service on your GPS?
Yes, it is available with the Travel Companion Full Version at selected stations.
I want to be able to access the internet anywhere I go, do you offer a solution?
Yes, we offer Travel Companion Full Version at selected stations. Here you can connect to 5 devices with unlimited data usage and unlimited international calls. We provide this service on behalf of a third party so you will need to read and agree to separate terms and conditions with them. This terms and conditions have to be signed by yourself on the device at time of rental.
Please note: In many countries, including the Germany, it is illegal to drive while using a handheld mobile phone, tablet or other communications device. It is your responsibility to drive safely and according to the laws of the country you are driving in.
How much does Travel Companion Full version cost?
The fee for hiring Travel Companion Full version will depend on where you're renting but you can expect it to be between EUR 13.80 and EUR 16.80 a day. If you rent the vehicle for more than 14 days, you'll only be charged for a maximum of 14 days and get to use the Travel Companion Full Version (TCT) for the duration of your rental, up to 28 days.
If the mobile Travel Companion device is damaged, lost or stolen, and if you are responsible for that, you will have to pay for a replacement. The costs of this are based on the replacement value and based on experience, amount to EUR 260.00 plus the rental costs.
If any mobile accessories are damaged, lost or stolen, and if you are responsible for that, you will have to pay for a replacement. The costs of this are expected to range between EUR 10.00 and EUR 150.00 plus the rental costs.
I am intending to drive along toll roads; do you offer a device to make this quicker and easier for me?
No, unfortunately we do not offer any electronic toll charging devices at this time.

Winter equipment to rent

I am concerned about the road conditions, do you offer all-weather tyres?
Yes, if the rental location you are hiring from is in an area where it’s illegal to drive without all-weather tyres at certain times of year, the vehicle will automatically be supplied with them and the fee will be included in your rental fee or contract.
We can also supply all-weather tyres for a fee. This will depend on where you’re renting but you can expect it to be between 15 EUR and 18,70 EUR a day. If you rent the vehicle for more than 10 days, you will only be charged for a maximum of 10 days and get to use the all-weather tyres for the duration of your rental, up to 28 days.

During winter season (15 November to 15 March), our rental vehicles in germany are equipped with winter tyres. The fee for this is already included in the rental price (deviations possible for business customers).
If any all-weather tyre is damaged, lost or stolen, and if you are responsible for that, you will have to pay for a replacement pair. The costs of this are based on the replacement value and based on experience, amount to EUR 150.00 and EUR 400.00 plus the rental costs.
In the event that your rental does not already contain all-weather tyres and you want to have these tyres, please notify us at least 24 hours in advance. If you need them at shorter notice, please call the Reservations team.

I am going skiing, do you offer snow chains?
Yes, if the rental location you are hiring from is in an area where it is illegal to drive without Snow Chains or all-weather tyres at certain times of year, the vehicle will automatically be supplied with snow chains and the fee will be included in your rental fee. You can ask not to have these but we recommend that you take either snow chains or all-weather tyres at these locations.
Snow chains are also available in some other rental locations. The fee for snow chains depends on where you are renting but you can expect it to be between 72.00 EUR and 90.35 EUR a rental.
If any snow chain is damaged, lost or stolen, you will have to pay for a replacement pair. The costs of this are based on the replacement value and based on experience, rate between 69 EUR and 100 EUR plus rental costs.
We can not fit snow chains for you, and we can not arrange for them to be fitted.

Travel Into Other Countries

International journeys outside Germany are permitted for certain countries but generally require prior approval by Avis.
If approved by Avis, a Cross Border Fee (CBF) is payable. This amounts to Euro 9.41 per day,
and maximum Euro 43.92 per rental.
If approval has been given, the following provisions shall apply:

What countries am I allowed to take the vehicle to?

You are only allowed to use the vehicle in the following countries: Austria, Andorra, Belgium, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Germany, Denmark, Spain, France, Finland, Liechtenstein, Great Britain, Hungary, Croatia, Italy, Ireland, Luxemburg, Monaco, Norway, Netherlands, Portugal, Poland, San Marino, Sweden, Slovakia, Slovenia.

Entries into Italy (I), Czech Republic (CZ), Croatia (HR), France (F), Hungary (H), Poland (PL), Slovakia (SK) and Slovenia (SLO) are not allowed for vehicles of car group F.
Porsche vehicles may be driven in Germany (D), Austria (A) and Switzerland (CH) only.
It is prohibited driving our vehicles into Albania (AL), Azerbaijan (AZ), Bulgaria (BG), Bosnia and Herzegovina (BIH), Belarus (BY), Cyprus (CY), Estonia (EST), Georgia (GE), Greece (GR), Iceland (IS), Kazakhstan (KZ), Kosovo (RKS), Latvia (LV), Lithuania (LT), Malta (M), Macedonia (MK), Moldavia (MD), Montenegro (MNE), Romania (RO), Russia (RUS), Serbia (SRB), Turkey (TR), Ukraine (UA) and any country outside continental Europe.
Nor is it permitted to use our vehicles on the Balearic Islands, Canaries, Corsica, Crete, Sardinia

Any infringement of or non-compliance with any of the above provisions shall entitle Avis to terminate the rental agreement without notice or to withdraw from the rental agreement. Claims for compensation by the renter are excluded in such a case. Avis's entitlement to compensation for any damage incurred as a result of the violation of any of the above provisions shall remain unaffected.

Can I buy a product to allow me to drive in other countries?

No, regrettably, we do not offer any products which enable you to drive in other countries.

Please note entries into France (F), Italy (I), Czech Republic (CZ), Croatia (HR), Hungary (H), Poland (PL), Slovakia (SK) and Slovenia (SLO) are not allowed for vehicles of car group F.
