Five Sydney Baked Goods Worth Jumping in an Avis Hire Car For | Avis Car Rental

If you’re devoted to carbs – in all their starchy, golden glory – you already know Sydney’s packing some great bakeries. The goodies are spread across the city, and Avis car rental will have you sorted for your criss-crossing city explorations.

Indulgent treats deserve a luxury car rental to match, so if you need wheels to get to one of these standout bakeries, find the closest Sydney car hire locations. Interstate visitors looking for Sydney care hire are looked after at Avis too – whether they’re after electric car hire or an SUV rental, or simply any kind of car hire from Sydney airport. Just like all Sydneysiders looking for wheels: Avis car hire is available from Harbour Marriott in Circular Quay, World Square in Haymarket and Star City in Darling Harbour.

Custard tart from Flour, Caringbah

Once you’ve looked after your Sydney car hire, head south towards Cronulla – or head there first and pick up your wheels from Avis Car & Truck Rental Sutherland Shire, in Taren Point. Then, in your SUV rental or electric car hire, head to Caringbah and park on the wide leafy Willarong Road, then wander inside this buzzy suburban bakery to gaze into the glass cabinet and racks of bread. It’ll be tough, ‘cause you’ll want to peer through the big window into the temperature-controlled “doughroom”, where bakers who learned the ropes at Humble and Flour and Stone are hard at work replenishing the often sell-out goods. The slightly sticky saffron and vanilla scrolls are hard to pass up. As are the generous slabs of topped focaccia. But the jiggle of the eggy custard tart, with grated fresh nutmeg atop, is what you should go for. Tip: arrive around 9am, when a tray of the still-warm beauties first hits the counter.

Pistachio baklava from Gaziantep Sweets, Auburn

Viridescent trays of baklava in all shapes and sizes are stacked in the windows of Zeki Atilgan’s Gaziantep Sweets. The crisp sheets of filo are handmade, and the premium pistachios come from Gaziantep – the store’s namesake city in Türkiye. The next best thing to travelling there yourself? The Qantas Points you earn with your Avis car hire. Sobyet, midye, kuru antep or bulbul: there are many shapes and styles of the syrupy baked good. None are sickly sweet though, and you can opt for walnuts or chocolate. Hot, stretchy kunefe is made daily, as well as the crunchy threads of angel-hair kadaifi pastry.

Fruit tart from Self Raised Bread Shoppe, Carlton

Lines snake along a curb in Carlton almost every day as punters wait for hand-rolled doughnuts plump with custard, berry-topped danishes and hulking deli sandwiches. But my pick at Self Raised Bread Shoppe is the little fruit tarts with deeply golden, frilly edges and an airy mascarpone filling. The toppings change with the seasons, and all are excellent. This retro bakery is 30 minutes from your Sydney CBD car hire stop-off on Pitt Street or in Circular Quay – or about 20 minutes from Sydney airport car hire – and it’s owned by Sal Senan and brother-and-sister-duo Hussein and Amani Rachid. This team is also behind pizza favourites My Mother’s Cousin (less than 10 minutes from Avis Sydney car rental in Hurstville) and NYC-style joint Slice Shoppe (where, after your Sydney airport car hire or Avis car hire Alexandria stop, you’ll be enjoying whopping slices of pepperoni or margherita pies).

Maritozzi from Norma’s Deli, Manly

The team here is also behind nearby cult-followed croissant kiosk Rollers Bakehouse. But instead the offering spans grocer, Greek diner and coffee shop at Norma’s Deli. Find slices of toast slathered in taramasalata, snacky breakfast plates and hefty serves of moussaka. And the baked goods: slabs of puffed-up and olive-studded focaccia, silky Basque burnt cheesecakes and rich gluten-free brownies. The star, however, is the maritozzi. The plump brioche buns are baked fresh, then filled with juicy slices of whatever fruit’s in season and airy Chantilly. A quick dip in quick-setting chocolate and you’ve got some crunch too. Eat in with a double espresso, or take it straight to a shady spot by the beach – in the wheels you picked up at car hire Sydney airport or Avis’s Sydney car hire locations.

Plain croissant from Iggy’s Bread, Bronte

One of Sydney’s best croissants is on this eastern beachy block. Deep brown, deeply savoury, crunchy on the outside and pillowy on the inside, it’s truly glorious. Iggy’s Bread is the bakery by Igor Ivanovic, and along with your pastry fix you should nab a half-loaf of the brown sourdough and a big scoop of the coffee-coloured muesli sitting in a big glass jar on the counter. If there’s a line, try your luck 40 metres away at Cafe 143, which also stocks these perfect pastries. Once you’ve carb-loaded, hop in your SUV rental car and head down the hill for a dip in the Bogey Hole – then cruise along an iconic stretch of coastline, all the way to Bondi.
