Queensland was the most popular state for road trips in 2018, according to data revealed today by leading mobility provider Avis Australia. The data revealed a staggering 222 million kilometres was driven across the country in Avis rental cars last year, with almost a third (32%) taking place in the Sunshine State.
The data sheds light on Australia’s car rental and road-travel habits from 2018, including a state-by-state breakdown of kilometres driven, the longest road trips tackled and the most popular rental locations.
The data also revealed the most popular car hired in 2018 was an intermediate hatchback, such as the Toyota Corolla.
Breaking it down state by state, Avis revealed that New South Wales and Victoria also loved to get on the road in 2018, attributing 49 million kilometres (22%) and 38 million kilometres (17%) of the total distance travelled across the country respectively. Surprisingly, the smallest Aussie state, Tasmania, still racked up a respectable 17.4 million kilometres (8%) driven over the year.

Tasmania | 17,419,908 |

Other brave travellers also journeyed through the Red Centre (Central Australia), with other ambitious routes explored including Darwin to Perth (27 days), Port Headland (WA) to Brisbane (25 days) and Hobart to Mackay (19 days).
