There’s something about Cairns that just instantly relaxes you. But it was seeing the airport in the rearview of my Avis car that really did the trick.
First stop, the world’s largest freestanding natural pyramid. Yeah, I didn’t see it coming either, but I promise you Walsh’s Pyramid is well worth a stop. Inspired, we turned off the Bruce highway, and found ourselves winding through a lush world heritage rainforest. Like that didn’t already hit the spot, lunch at the Bingil Bay Cafe turned out to be just as satisfying, as did the infinity pool at Mission Beach Bungalows.
The next morning we had one mission, to explore the bays of Mission Beach. It was the perfect way to start the day, made even better by an afternoon at Atherton Tablelands. We picked up fresh fruit from a produce stall, enjoyed stunning views at the Nucifora Tea Plantation, and finished the trip off with a picnic at the Milla Milla Falls. If joy was a place, it would definitely be North Queensland. So get there. You’ll love it.
