How much does it cost to hire a 4WD in Australia?

The cost of 4WD car rental varies significantly based on many factors. First and foremost, the type of vehicle you hire has a huge influence on the overall price. Not all 4x4 rental vehicles are the same, with utes and wagons priced accordingly based on their size, performance, and capacity. The rental period also influences the cost, as does the inclusion of accessories. For example, if you rent a car with a towing package, the price is likely to be higher.

Can you hire a 4WD to go off-road?

Unfortunately no. Avis vehicles must only be used on a road which is properly formed and constructed as a sealed, metalled or gravel road.

Do I need an Australian driving licence to rent a 4WD?

The Driver must (i) hold a full, current and valid driving licence (not being a learners licence or provisional licence), (ii) have an International Driving Permit (IDP) or official translation (if a licence is not in Roman alphabet), (iii) have held their licence for minimum 12 consecutive months immediately prior to signing the Rental Agreement.

An International Driving Permit is not a stand-alone document and this must be carried with your valid domestic driving licence for it to be valid.

Digital drivers licences are only accepted in the issuing state. If you're travelling interstate you must present a physical (plastic) drivers licence.

What is the age requirement to rent a car in Australia?

The minimum age to drive a vehicle with Avis is 21 years of age. All drivers must hold a current, full and valid driver's licence, that has been valid for a minimum of 12 consecutive months. A young driver surcharge may apply.

What are you supposed to do before you return a rental 4WD?

When you return your rental car to Avis, you must do so with a full tank of fuel. We also ask that you remove all your personal belongings from the vehicle. Finally, please return the car to us in a clean state, ready for the next customer to drive.

Can I return a 4WD to the location before or after business hours?

There are select Avis locations that allow returns outside of business hours. Please contact the return location directly or contact the Avis Reservations team to check if this is possible on 136 333.

Do I get a refund if I return my rental 4WD early?

If you return the vehicle before the original return date (early return), you will not be refunded any portion of your payment. This does not detract from your rights as a consumer under applicable consumer protection legislation, including the Australian Consumer Law.

Can I return my rental 4WD to a different location?

Avis allows one way rentals between select locations. Enter your details in the search widget to see available options. If you have an existing reservation, you can amend your booking online by clicking this link and following the prompts or on our mobile app. If you have collected your car and are having trouble amending your booking online, please contact the location you collected the vehicle from to check one way options.
